Home » Thermal Barrier
According to building codes across North America, spray foam requires a thermal barrier that separates it from flames in the case of a fire. Typically, this is a gypsum board, which is an approved thermal barrier, but in cases where drywall is not being applied, or where stricter building codes are in effect, another approved application is required.
For instances where only a minimum of 15mins of protection is required, an intumescent coating is suitable, these are specially formulated to expand 50 times their original thickness upon contact with fire, providing the occupants with ample time to vacate the area before the flames ignite the SPF insulation and release harmful chemicals into the air.
In other circumstances such as commercial applications, where a minimum 1hr thermal barrier is needed, a cementitious material is required over top of the SPF insulation, this is created with cement or gypsum and spray-applied like the intumescent coating with advanced machinery. Whatever the application, whether residential, commercial, or institutional, our installers are certified and capable of handling projects of any magnitude.
1. Improved Energy Efficiency
By reducing heat transfer, a thermal barrier helps to keep indoor spaces cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, reducing the need for heating and cooling systems and lowering energy bills.
2. Increased Comfort
A thermal barrier helps to maintain a consistent indoor temperature, creating a more comfortable living or working environment.
3. Enhanced Safety
A thermal barrier can help prevent the spread of fire by slowing down its progression, providing valuable time for occupants to evacuate the building.
4. Improved Indoor Air Quality
Many thermal barriers also have soundproofing properties, reducing the transmission of outside noise into the building and improving indoor air quality by reducing the amount of dust, pollen and other outdoor pollutants that can enter.
5. Long-Lasting Protection
A thermal barrier can provide long-lasting protection against heat, cold and fire, helping to maintain the integrity and longevity of the building.
